Indian children growing up in America have to go through various levels of adjustment. Often they display different personae, one in the home, another in school, a third with Indian friends, a fourth with American friends. I’m sure Keshni Kashyap must have gone through such experiences; indeed she says so in her interview: “There are certainly autobiographical elements to the story”. The fact that she has turned out to a well-adjusted and creative person suggests that she can serve a model for South Asian American children. That’s what makes the book significant.
